If you’ve ever gone speed-dating, you may understand what it’s been like to be an AirHogs fan over the past two weeks. Encountering the dreaded mid-summer slump, the AirHogs roster has undergone dramatic changes -- and some of the new faces came and went faster that you could enter their digits (6-4-3…) on your scoresheet.
In the last week alone, nine new players were signed to the 22-man-active-roster—which meant at least nine guys left, and some never had time to un-pack. Such is the life of an independent minor-league ball player, and on that note—also the life of an independent-minor-league manager. Just as in speed-dating, you know right away if you’ve “hit it off,” a good manager knows right away if you can hit at all.
AirHogs field manager Pete Incaviglia may not be exactly “kissing frogs” but he’s definitely on the look-out for some princes (specifically pitchers) and if these nine new faces prove themselves quickly, AirHogs fans can certainly look forward to a marriage made in ‘Hog heaven. And who knows?—maybe even a play-off berth.
Additionally there are several AirHog players swinging the bat well, just some of the timing of the hits haven’t been as beneficial as needed. The AirHogs have five hitters batting over .300 with 1B Greg Porter leading the way with his .379 batting average. Third baseman David Espinosa is holding his own batting .361 Rounding out this group are 2B Antoin Gray, OF Daniel Berg and OF Robert Perry.
Be sure to mark your calendars for Saturday, July 31st. The original number 88 will be throwing out the ceremonial first pitch. That’s right, you can see Drew Pearson in person. To top things off, there will be a fireworks show after the game. Be there!
