Last week, the first place Texas Rangers didn’t exactly have the week they were looking for. After winning a franchise record eight consecutive series, they lost both series they played. They only won two games and lost four. The good news is they still lead the Los Angeles Angels by 3.5 games after Sunday night.
The All-Star rosters were named Sunday and it is full of Rangers. They have five players on the team, which is the most since 2004 when they also had five. Vladimir Guerrero was the easy choice for designated hitter. He has not made the team the past two seasons and will be returning to Angel Stadium, the place he played for the last six seasons. Josh Hamilton was the top vote getter for outfielders in the American League. This is his third consecutive start in the game, making it every year as a Ranger. Elvis Andrus was elected by the players and this will be his first of many All-Star appearances. Neftali Feliz is also making his first appearance and is tied for the American League lead in saves. Ian Kinsler also made the squad. Michael Young is one of five players in the Final Vote contest. This is the last spot on the roster determined by a fan vote this week.
Last week, the Rangers added veteran catcher Bengie Molina in a trade with the Giants. He becomes the starter and was added for his defense and his ability to call a game. He was traded for Chris Ray and pitching prospect Michael Main.
Tommy Hunter continues to win and pitch quality starts. Saturday night, he threw seven plus innings and gave up only one run. He has won five games since being called up in early June with no losses. Scott Feldman has been nothing like last year. He was the Opening Day starter but has only managed five wins all season. He now leads the American League in hits allowed.
This week the Rangers have two home series against the Indians and Orioles. On Saturday, they are giving away Michael Young caps; and Sunday, it’s Vladimir Guerrero All-Star shirts.
